Farm to School Initiative-- Overview

SWP launched this initiative in fall 2004 to connect UM Children's Garden and Pride of the Prairie partners to develop a Farm to School program. The goal is to connect schools with local farms with objectives of serving healthy meals in school cafeterias, improving student nutrition, providing health and nutrition education opportunities that will last a lifetime, and supporting local small farmers. In 2005, a pilot was developed in the Willmar school district to test ideas and demonstrate a model for rural schools; 2008/9 a statewide on-line tool kit was developed with MISA (Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture); 2009 UM Extension supported a part-time statewide position; and 2009 a SARE grant was awarded to implement Farm to School trainings across the state.
