At almost 800 species, moths are the most species-rich group documented in the greater Sax-Zim Bog. Moths often surpass their butterfly cousins in color, pattern, behavior, and specialized relationship to plants.
This training will be a good introduction to moth diversity in northeastern Minnesota and allow us to spend time outdoors at a time most folks don’t. We will check out nighttime biodiversity with headlamps and UV flashlights. We should hear and see a good diversity of nocturnal insects, bats, and other mammals.
Because this event is at night, and mostly stationary, plan on bringing a headlamp or flashlight and a folding chair. Also bring bug spray or long sleeves to prepare for non-target nocturnal insects and cameras, hand lenses, or any other item you might need to experience the Bog at night.
All walking is on level surfaces and trails near the Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center.
$35
University of Minnesota Extension is committed to providing equal opportunity for participation in all programs, services, and activities. To request accommodations for persons with disabilities, contact info@minnesotamasternaturalist.org two weeks before the start of the event. Advanced training courses provide Master Naturalists and the public with opportunities to participate in a recreational activity and learn about a new natural resource topic. Topics build on the curriculum taught in our core biome courses, but participants do not need to be Master Naturalists to take any of the advanced training courses.
