Creating the Learning Environment

Your program environment and culture play an important part in social and emotional learning (SEL). You can influence the culture of your program by paying attention to the ways that routines, behavior expectations, and conflict resolution processes within your program support SEL. This section includes tools and templates to help staff establish expectations, give feedback, and reflect.

Download the entire Creating the Learning Environment section.

Skill Building Plan

Full Value Contract

A discussion guide for youth to establish group norms and common expectations.

SEL Feedback Template

Prepare for skill-building conversations with youth.

Emoji Reflection

This template is for regular self-reflection throughout a project. Turn it into a tool to measure individual and program-level progress over time.

Reflection Bank

How to include reflection in your program.

People who use this toolkit say:

"I saw many connections between the activities given here and YPQA practices (reflection, supportive environment, etc.), which is very helpful to the many organizations and youth workers who are always thinking about how to include more YPQA items in their programming, like we are."
