State Fair Food Service Employment Opportunties

A variety of employment opportunities are available at 4-H state-level summer events. Food service opportunities are listed below.

Position: Cook

(1-5 Positions Available)

Assist in general preparation and cooking of large volume and variety of foods or is responsible for large scale preparation or cooking of specialty items such as meats, vegetables and fruits, bakery goods, salads, desserts, etc.; supervise and participate in cleaning food service areas and procuring supplies from storage areas; responsible for implementation of safe and sanitary food handling procedures; supervise Cooks Assistant(s).

Qualifications: Food preparation and cooking experience in large scale food service operations involving food service for several hundred people.
Wages: hourly wage based on prior 4-H food service experience. Room and board provided.
Accountability: Responsible to Food Service Manager
Dates of Employment: YELLO, Arts-In, State Fair

Position: Assistant Cook

(1-4 Positions Available)

Cooks Assistants assist the assigned cook(s) in the preparation and/or cooking of foods; assist in preparation of selected specialty items; procure and return supplies from/to storage; prepare snacks, breakfast dishes, etc. as directed; assist with preparation and cleaning up of food service area.
Barn Service Assistants are responsible for loading the vehicle(s) with all items needed to serve meals off site. Organize first floor storage areas with non-perishable food items and paper goods used off-site, and first floor cooler area with perishable items used in off site service.

Qualifications: Experience in food service. Preference given to persons having previous experience in 4-H food service.
Wages: hourly wage based on prior 4-H experience. Room and board provided.
Accountability: Responsible to Food Service Manager. Supervision will be provided by Cook and Food Service Manager.
Dates of Employment: YELLO, Arts-In, State Fair

Position: Food Service Assistant

(4-18 Positions Available)

Perform regular cafeteria tasks such as food preparation , cleaning and setting tables; serving 4-H participants; clean up cafeteria following meals. Tasks are usually rotated.

Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age at the time of employment. Experience and interest in food service operations is desirable; must be neat and possess good work habits such as being punctual, dependable, a willing worker that relates well to others on the work staff.
Wages: hourly wage based on prior 4-H food service experience. Room and board provided.
Accountability: Responsible to Food Service Manager.
Dates of Employment: YELLO, Arts-In, State Fair


Applications will be accepted until five working days prior to the event.  However, priority will be given to those applications received by June 1.  For those employed during events, meals and lodging in the 4-H building are provided in addition to wages and are considered a part of the per hour pay scale.
