Clothing & Textiles

Have you ever dreamed about designing your own clothing? Learn the basics of sewing construction and how to make simple clothing and accessories. Develop skills in design and fashion illustration, business and marketing, technology in sewing, and learn about careers in the textile industry.

Learning guides

Level 1

Begin a portfolio of sewing projects. Gather and identify sewing tools for a sewing box; describe uses of tools; measure correctly; select appropriate fabrics; identify parts of a sewing machine.

Level 2

Continue to add to your portfolio of sewing projects; conduct a wardrobe inventory; understand different edge finishing techniques; make pattern adjustments; cut a pattern; machine sew a garment; compare hand and machine stitching; explore garment parts and their construction.

Level 3

Continue to add to your portfolio of sewing projects; explore couture techniques; describe the benefits and uses of a serger; alter a garment; explore careers in textiles and clothing.

For adult leaders

The STEAM Clothing series for project participants also serves as a guide for project leaders. The five volumes in the series may be purchased singly or as a set.
