Dan Patch and Youth Leadership Awards

Since 1966, one member of the 4-H horse project has been awarded the Dan Patch Award. The award is based on the individual's overall achievement, leadership, and service. More recently, a second division was added to the award process intended to recognize younger youth. The Dan Patch award focuses on youth in 10th through one year past 12th grade at the start of the contest year, with the Youth Leadership award intended for youth in 6th through 9th grade at the same time.

Basic requirements to apply for either award include:

  1. Enrollment in the MN 4-H Horse or Horseless Project for at least 2 years
  2. At least one year of horse related Leadership.
  3. Participation in at least one of the following:
    1. Horse bowl
    2. Speech/Demonstration contest
    3. Judging or Hippology team
    4. County/cluster leadership workshop, camp or retreat,
    5. Winter Roundup,
    6. YELLO or similar county, cluster, region, state or national leadership activity

Applications are due by April 1st of the contest year for both award divisions. An application consists of the forms available below, completed and signed by the required adults and resumes and portfolios for the youth. They are judged first on their resume and portfolio by teams of judges using a standard scoring and feedback worksheet. The final combined score from that judging determines the winners of the 6 State Horse Show trips in the Youth Leadership group and the top 20 from the Dan Patch division. In addition these scores are used to award National Leadership trips to 20 youth 14 years of age and older.

Dan Patch top 20 finalists are invited to a Judging Day held each June. There they are judged on a Personal Interview, a Group Problem discussion, and a Presentation by teams of judges. Scores from that event are combined with the Resume and Portfolio Scores to determine the recipients of the 10 State Horse Show trips and the winner of the Dan Patch award.

More detailed information on each award is contained in the Application guides posted below as are the names of our current trip winners and past Dan Patch Award recipients.

Application deadline - April 1
