Building Leadership & Understanding
BLU 2015

The 4-H Building Leadership and Understanding (BLU) program is an exciting and fun leadership adventure, hosted by the Minnesota 4-H State Ambassadors, that brings together youth from across the state of Minnesota in an overnight leadership workshop. Each retreat uses a youth-teaching-youth model to teach a leadership topic, participate in team-building activities, and meet other youth from their region. This year's theme is 4-H BLU, Tune into You, which will focus on self-acceptance and acceptance of others and may be most appropriate for middle school and early high school youth, but is open to youth through one year past high school.

What happens at BLU?

The Minnesota 4-H State Ambassadors plan and facilitate each of the BLU events. The State Ambassadors use a youth-teaching-youth approach to teach their peers about a leadership topic each year. They engage participants in hands-on activities, games, small group discussions, and a participant dance during each event. Participants stay in a hotel overnight and are chaperoned by screened adult volunteers.

Who can attend?

All youth (non-4-H youth are encouraged to participate) enrolled in grades 6-12 and college first year students are welcome to attend, though this year's content is most directed to youth in middle school and early high school. There may be additional leadership opportunities during the event for youth who are in higher grade levels.

All registrations are contingent on appropriate chaperone coverage, if you are interested in volunteering, or know somebody who is, please contact your County Extension Office.

How much does it cost and how do I register?

The cost to register for BLU is $85. The fee covers all meals, lodging, activities, and supplies. An optional conference T-shirt is available for $12. Some counties may have scholarship funds available, please inquire directly with your county. Current 4-H Members and Volunteers can register through their County Extension Office or directly on 4HOnline. Instructions for registering are available here. If you are not currently a 4-H Member, please contact your county's 4-H Program to ask about becoming a short-term member.

Weather cancellation policy: As we know, Minnesota's winter weather can often provide us with many surprises. We will do our best to reschedule any event that is cancelled due to inclement weather. In the event a rescheduling is not possible, a $20 program fee may be deducted from the registration fee to cover actual expenses, though we will work to make this as minimal as possible. If a t-shirt is ordered, it will be available either via postal mail, or through the County Extension Office by the end of March.

Refund policy: Please review and complete the refund request form.
