Mark Haugen

Extension educator, regional 4-H youth development programs

Current work, research and interests

Mark Haugen PhotoMark Haugen believes that the leaders of programs are critically important. In his work, he aims to support organizational staff and volunteers in clarifying what work needs to happen, prioritizing specific initiatives, and developing strategies to support long-term impact. Mark provides leadership for the Center for Youth Development in the 15-county central region in the areas of staff supervision and evaluation, STEM programming, and financial, operational, and risk management policy.

Mark is a trained public school teacher (social studies) and administrator (community education), holds an M.Ed from the school of social work at the University of Minnesota in youth development leadership, and is currently pursuing a PhD in organizational leadership, policy, and development. His research is focused on the behaviors of effective leaders in dispersed mission-based organizations, the factors that impact employee retention, and staff self-perceptions of effectiveness as organizational leaders.

Since 2004, Mark has been working with and on behalf of youth in roles as a volunteer and staff manager, an educator, and as a leader. He believes that the greatest benefit of Extension and 4-H work isn't the activities and programs we provide leadership to, it is the community leaders that develop their abilities through our programs as they make their communities stronger. He believes that one effective method of doing this is through 4-H STEM programs. He has supported 4-H STEM by providing leadership to Engineer It! promotional events, co-authoring the Engineering a Rube Goldberg Contraption curriculum and serving as a co-chair of the Minnesota 4-H STEM team.
