Beetles, Bugs and Insects with Obvious Wings

horntail (specifically pigeon tremex), Tremex columba

horntail Appearance:

Stout bodied, 2 inches long.  It has a reddish brown body with amber-colored wings.  Females possess a conspicuous ovipositor. 

Where/When: Associated with recently dead or severely declining trees, especially maples, or nearby areas.  Adults are most active during August and September.
Significance: Rarely attacks healthy trees and is not considered to be a pest.  Not aggressive towards people.  May attempt to poke a person with its ovipositor if mishandled but it is doubtful it can penetrate human skin.
