Giant water bug Appearance:

This bug is 2 - 2 1/2 inches long.

Where/When: This insect is aquatic and is found in lakes and ponds.   It can fly and is attracted to lights in parking lots, ball fields, and similar places.   Active spring and summer.
Significance: General predator feeding on insects, tadpoles, small fish, and similar creatures.   Can bite people if mishandled.
