The nightcrawler (Lumbricus terrestris) is a very common bait worm that was brought from Europe with European settlement. Each nightcrawler creates a vertical burrow up to 6 feet deep and feeds primarily on fallen leaves by pulling them into this burrow. Where it is abundant it can consume most of the fallen leaves by mid-summer.
