Appearance: Most species are ½ inch long and dark-colored with white spots.   Some are brightly colored.
Where/When: They prefer open, sunny areas in a variety of different environments.   They can run quickly, usually in short bursts.   They will fly occasionally, especially when threatened.   Active from spring through summer.
Significance: General predator on ants and many other types of small insects.
