Appearance:

This springtail is 1/12th inch long, dark-colored, and can jump.       

Where/When: Occurs on top of snow cover, particularly at base of trees.   Active during mild, sunny days from January through March.
Significance: Helps to recycle organic matter by feeding on decaying plant material.   Does not injure trees or other plants.
