Building an Inclusive Organization

A Definition of Diversity

The term "DIVERSITY," as defined by the University of Minnesota Extension Service, embodies the simple fact of human differences. Because of historical and legal imperatives unique to our nation, however, particular emphasis is given within the context of our collective work in communities throughout the State of Minnesota to the specific areas listed in the University of Minnesota's Equal Opportunity Statement. Those areas include: Race, Color, Creed, Religion, National Origin, Sex, Age, Marital Status, Disability, Public Assistance Status, Veteran Status, and Sexual Orientation.

Introduction

The demographic face of the state of Minnesota has changed drastically since the 1990 census was released. The Minnesota trend is not unique, it reflects the entire nation. Minnesota has had a large influx of Latino/Chicano Americans, African Americans, and Asian Americans since the 1990 census. There has always been a significant number of American Indians in the state. In short, the racial diversity of the state has changed drastically and all parts of the state are impacted by it.

The University of Minnesota Extension Service is the outreach arm of the University with the mission of making all of its educational programs accessible to all citizens of the state. If Extension is to fulfill its mission, then all of our educational programs must be made accessible in all communities across the state and to all citizens in each community.

To effectively deliver our educational programs, we must hire qualified people of color into our staff ranks to work closely with staff not of color as we serve all citizens of Minnesota. Staff should be trained to work with either citizens of color or citizens not of color. All staff should be educated in the cultures and values within the state and understand that simply because values are different doesn't make one culture better than another. All cultures and their values therein must be respected and celebrated. This page will help us share with University of Minnesota Extension staff and others diversity initiatives, efforts, and concerns as well as staff development opportunities that are local, state-wide, regional, and national.
