Writing style

Refer to the Extension writing style guide on the employee intranet. For items not addressed there, default to the Associated Press Stylebook. Extension's dictionary of choice is Merriam-Webster's.

Web-specific styles

Use sentence case, even for pages titles, headers, and breadcrumbs.

Sentence case = Health of dairy cows = yes
Title case = Health of Dairy Cows = no

Non-HTML links include size and file type in parentheses.

Example: Dairy industry analysis (1 MB PDF)

  • Use MB for megabytes and K for kilobytes.

Page titles (text within title tag) should be formatted as follows: Title of page : Program/area : University of Minnesota Extension

Example: Health of dairy cows : Dairy Extension : University of Minnesota Extension
