Tourism Assessment Program

This project facilitates and builds capacity among communities to assess local assets and determine how they might develop and sustain tourism opportunities. Community members participate in identifying and assessing local assets, visiting another community to understand tourism potential and deciding what actions they wish to take with the project findings. The project was defined and supported by the RSDP SCC at a meeting of representatives from each region, university faculty and key partners including Explore Minnesota.

Increased skills and ability among community members and business leaders to assess their assets and determine how they might develop and sustain tourism. Specifically working with communities identified by RSDP to build community member capacity, engage them in community development and enhance regional partnerships.

Anticipated outcomes include:

  1. Increased understanding of the economic and social importance of tourism
  2. Increased community cohesion and sense of place
  3. Specific planning and development opportunities to inform planning. Each community receives a report of the findings and is guided in a facilitated conversation to establish action steps to use the information.

SWP Board Funding Investment: $3,500
Matching Funds: $3,500 from each Region, $25,000 from RSDP SCC
