Community Capacity-Building Initiative - Winona FRFF Next Steps

The Frozen River Film Festival's Next Step group was the first recipient of ERC's Community Capacity-Building (CCB) Initiative. With training and support from ERC the group generated three projects:

The Community Capacity-Building (CCB) Initiative purpose is to help local people identify their assets and capabilities and mobilize them to create the kind of future they envision for themselves. It is modeled after the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation's Town Meeting Initiative and for the first round ERC received funding and technical assistance from the Foundation. CCB is a two-year process that:

Next Steps builds on the Frozen River Film Festival as an educational and inspirational springboard for engaging people in meaningful and visible community ventures. Next Steps received funding to support community organizing activities and to implement projects.

SE RSDP hosted two leadership training sessions: a community-building and sharing session and an Asset-Based Community Development training session. Next Steps formed a core leadership team, mobilized new, diverse participation, hosted their own "town hall" meetings and chose three projects to support: Winona Public Gardening Plots, Riverway Learning Community on-site gardens, and the Free Winona newspaper.
