Faces of our Farmers

Develop a traveling photo-essay exhibit telling the story of Winona County's food farmers.

Tom van der Linden, University of Minnesota-Winona County Extension

Tom van der Linden coordinated this project. A steering committee of community leaders reviewed the project design. A local photographer with professional experience was engaged. She took photographs at a dozen farms, emphasizing the variety of farming occupations and including a diverse variety of farmers. Photos were color corrected and enlargements made. Tom - a former newspaper editor - wrote the biographies of each operation. A traveling display was built on a limited budget ($1,500). Marketing materials were created, including brochures and logo.

A professional quality photo exhibit that shows the faces and tells the stories of the farm families who grow food in the greater Winona area was shown in multiple public spaces in Winona County. It traveled on a statewide basis when possible. An evaluation tool was developed and public reaction to the project was measured at two venues The evaluation showed people gained a new appreciation for the role of farming in our society.
