green darner Appearance:

Body length is 3 inches with a 4 inch wingspan.  Has a green thorax with a long, slender abdomen.  A male has a blue abdomen while a female have a purplish gray abdomen.  Has a distinctive bulls-eye pattern on top of its head in front of the eyes.

Where/When: Associated with still water, such as ponds and marshes.  Active from May to October.
Significance: A generalist predator that feeds on a wide variety of large and small flying insects.  Despite its size, it is harmless to people.  It can not sting with its abdomen.
