Size: 1/16 inch long
Where/when: Associated with rivers and streams, although it can fly miles away from its development sites. Prefers to be in shaded sites, especially areas of vegetation. Most common in May and June, although they are present from spring through the end of summer.
Significance: Nuisance to people and animals because of their bites. Can also be nuisance by flying around people's heads. Bites are usually painful and generally occur along the scalp, neck and other exposed areas of skin. Some people are sensitive to bites and can react severely. Black flies are not a known carrier of disease in Minnesota.
