Size Up to 1 inch. (It is often challenging to recognize ants from a picture. Because different species may be treated differently, be sure an ant problem is correctly identified before attempting control).
Where/when Mating swarms are found outdoors or indoors near nesting sites. They are typically present from April through June, although they may also be seen indoors during the winter.
Significance Sighting a swarm of winged carpenter ants indicates a nest is nearby. Knowing a nest's location helps when controlling a nest.
