Peony Virus PEONY                    VIRUSES Viruses on peonies mainly affect the leaves. There are several different viruses on peonies, causing varying symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms are mosaic, line, or ring patterns on the leaves, dwarfing, leaf curling.


Symptoms: Symptoms on peony are similar to those shown here on rose. Yellow & green mosaic, ring spots, or line patterns on leaves. Leaves may be stunted, curled, or distorted.

Causal organism: Various viruses
Over wintering: In plant material
Months of infection: Growing season
Method of dispersal: Propagation and grafting, rarely vectored by insects or nematodes
Infection point: Leaves & stems

Control Measures
Control: Purchase disease-free plants. Remove virus infected plants.
Labeled fungicides None
Comments: Virus-infected peony may grow and bloom normally. If infection is severe, plant should be removed and discarded. Laboratory testing is necessary for confirmation of viral infections.
