Bean                        BACTERIAL WILT Bacterial wilt of beans has not been reported since the 1970s.


Symptoms:  Plants exhibit wilting during periods of drought stress. Seedlings are often stunted or killed.

General Information
Causal organism: Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens subsp. flaccumfaciens
Over wintering: Infected seed and in plant material and debris
Months of infection: May to June
Method of dispersal: Hailstorms and warm weather (90 degrees F)
Infection point: Systemic spread in infected seed, or by wounds

Control Measures
Control: Use disease-free seed. Rotate crops every two to three years.

Comments: Always start with clean seeds and healthy seedlings to avoid this disease.
