polyphemus moth Appearance:

Body length is 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 inches long with a wingspan of 4 1/2 - 5 inches.  It has brown wings with a blue and yellow eyespot ringed in black on each hind wing.

Where/When: Found in rural and urban settings anywhere its host plants are found.  A  polyphemus caterpillar feeds on the leaves of many different hardwood trees, including ash, birch, maple, oak, and willow, as well as grapes.  Adults are active from May through July.  They are often attracted to lights at night
Significance: The caterpillars cause little, if any, damage to trees and shrubs.
