pelecinid wasp Appearance:

Shiny black, 2 inches in length.  Abdomen is particularly long and slender.

Where/When: Can be found in rural, suburban, and urban settings.  Active from July to August.
Significance: Parasitizes June beetle larvae (white grubs).  Not aggressive towards people.  May attempt to poke a person with its abdomen if mishandled but it rarely can penetrate human skin.
