ichneumonid wasp, Megarhyssa spp.

ichneumonid wasp Appearance:

Body length about 1 1/2  inches long with an ovipositor up to three inches long.  Generally reddish brown with yellow markings.

Where/When: Found in many environments, generally associated with trees.  Active from late May into September, most common in June and July. 
Significance: Parasite of horntails, an insect found in stressed or dying trees.  Megarhyssa is not aggressive towards people.  May attempt to poke a person with its ovipositor if mishandled but it would rarely penetrate human skin.
