Size 1/16 - 1/8 inch long
Where/when On many warm-blooded host animals, including cats, dogs, humans, rabbits, squirrels, mice, rats, chipmunks, raccoons, opossums, foxes, and chickens. Can be found any time of the year, generally more common during late summer and fall. Does not overwinter outdoors in Minnesota.
Significance Is a nuisance due to bites on humans and animals. Bites can be very irritating for some people and can sometimes produce a rash. Other people may show little reaction. Not known to transmit disease to people in Minnesota. For pets, bites can cause flea allergy dermatitis. Cat fleas can transmit tapeworms to dogs and cats.
