Answer to this month's Insect Quiz

  1. What are these insects?

They are fruit flies. Most fruit flies are about 1/8 inch long, have red eyes and an abdomen that appears to be striped. Be careful because there are other flies that are small and may be confused for fruit flies that would be controlled using different methods.

  2. What do they eat?

Fruit flies are found around fermenting and rotting food smells. They commonly infest old, overripe fruits and vegetables. However, they can also be found infesting other sources such as food residue in trash containers, infrequently-used kitchen sinks and garbage disposals as well as soft-drink, wine and beer residue. Wherever they feed, it is in relatively quiet, undisturbed areas in some type of fermenting organic material that is kept damp.

  3. Are insecticide sprays effective in controlling these flies?

Insecticides have limited value in controlling fruit flies. Spraying adult flies may reduce the number that you see in the short-term, but that does not eliminate them as long as a food source exists. If you don't know where they're infesting, they will return after you spray them.

  4. What is the best control of these flies?

The most effective method of controlling fruit flies is to remove their food source. Check your cupboards, trash containers, recycling bins, kitchen sinks for possible infestations. Finding the food source, though, can be challenging. The infestation is not always located where fruit flies are found. The food source could be nearby or in a completely different room (although you are finding them around the waste basket, they may just be attracted to smells and not actually breeding there). Once you find an infestation keep checking as there could be more than one food source. Patience and persistence are important to solve a fruit fly problem.
