Appearance:

Many species are slender and small, 1/8 inch long, dark colored beetles.   They have very short wing covers that exposes the beetle's abdomen.

Where/When: Found in many different habitats.   They are typically found on the ground, under stones and leaves and in manure and loose soil.   Active spring through summer.
Significance: General predators on a wide variety of insects.
