Trees FAQ

Pruning ApplesWhen is the best time to prune apple trees?
Alternate Year ApplesI have two apple trees on my father's farm. One year they bear extremely well and the next I get all most no fruit. What is the problem? One tree is a Haralson and the other is a Sweet 16.
Ash Losing Branches and Leaves I have an ash tree that was planted 21 years ago. In the last year or two it has started to lose its leaves. There are numerous bare branches and many fall off.
Ash Losing LeavesOur Ash tree seems to be losing its leaves and was slow to start budding/leafing this year. In looking at the fallen leaves it doesn't show any bugs but the leaves do have a few brown spots and are curled a bit. Any ideas?
Ash Flower GallsThe extension brief on this topic suggests that ash flower galls remain on the trees for two years. Do the galls return? If so to what degree?
Mt. Ash Not BloomingI have a European Mountain Ash that has not bloomed in the 4 years I've had it. It now has about a 4" trunk and growing very well. It gets good sun and fertilized 2 times a year (spikes). I've been using super phosphate it in the spring thinking that might stimulate blooming.
Bark BeetlesWhat are the signs of bark beetles? I have a densly pine lot and in one corner a bunch of pines only have needles on the very end of branch. They also look alot thinner-lack of needles- there has been new growth on them, but very small compared to the other trees. This has been getting worse in the last 2 years.
Birch DeclineWe have a beautiful mature birch tree in our front lawn. The problem is that the leaves are starting to turn yellow and sickly. The same thing happened to this tree last year. The tree seemed ok this year until recently. Our other birch tree seems fine. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix it before we lose this tree?
Brown Birch LeavesWe have birch trees in our front yard and many of the leaves are turning brown. We saw that there were a few caterpillars (brown) on the tree. None of the leaves had holes in them. All the neighbor's trees have this problem too! The leaves are falling like it is autumn!
Yellowing, Dying Birch I planted a river birch, Betula nigra , May 2000. Each year starting early summer the leaves start turning yellow (some developed purple spots), die & fall off. New leaves will regrow, but they too die early.
Selling Black Walnut WoodWe recently bought a home near Lake Phalen and are considering having a very large black walnut tree removed from our yard. I thinking that this beautiful tree must have a considerable value as lumber. Can you recommend any companies that would remove the tree for lumber. I have called several from the phone book and none of them deal with sawmills.
Replacing Black WalnutIn a storm last year, we lost a black walnut tree that shaded the house and shade garden plantings. This spring we removed the tree and roots from an area 4' wide and 4' deep. We're considering replacing this tree with a thornless honeylocust or hackberry. We want a tree that will tolerate any remaining black walnut juglone, has deep roots so that I can place shade plants close to the tree and will provide a moderate amount of shade. (The other trees in the area are a maple and ash.) Which tree would you recommend?
Bolts in tree I have several large oaks in my back yard (30" diameter) and live next to a pond. I'd like to put up several wood duck houses in the spring and will hang them on a 5/16"x4 1/2 lag bolt driven/screwed into these live oaks. Would driving these lag bolts into this oaks be harmful to the tree?
Construction InjuryHow do you determine if you will damage a mature tree, 100± year old white oak, by digging near to it for construction purposes? Is it the drip line or is there another measure?
Driveway RemodelingI am planning on replacing the existing driveway next summer. The new driveway that being planned will be wider than the existing one. At one side of the end (street end) of the driveway is a mature black walnut and a mature white pine on the other side. How careful must I be and how close can I be when digging around these two trees without disrupting the root systems?
Deer DamageCan I repair the damage that a buck (male deer) did to a sugar maple in my yard? He used the trunk to rub his antlers. This removed the bark from two sides of the tree. When I planted the tree 2 years ago, the deer ate (?) the bark off one side of the tree. Will this tree still grow with the bark off parts of three sides? The trunk is about 2.5" in dia.. The tree is about 12' high.
Dutch Elm TreatmentsHas any progress been made to find an inoculant to protect these grand old elms trees from Dutch elm disease? How effective are products? Can I purchase them and treat trees in my neighborhood? What are the costs? Do I need special equipment and training? What do private companies charge to do the work?
Cracks in TrunkA couple of years ago a large basswood tree on our property got a crack in it. It is about 20 feet long starting about 3 feet off the ground. It happened about this time of the year. We left it alone and figured in the spring the tree would be dead. It did not die, but seemed to be healed over. Now again this year the crack reappeared. Is there anything we should do for the tree or just wait till spring again and see if it lives through the winter again? The tree is fairly close to our house.
Holes in RowsWe've several trees of different varieties that have holes in the bark. They are spaced evenly, a little less than 1/4" apart and are in rows/columns. One tree, a mountain ash, has died and I've noticed these same holes now appearing on our clump of birch trees. What causes this and what should be done to protect more trees from dying?
Filling Holes in TreeI have an old oak tree with a hole at the fork that squirrels live happily in. I'd like to block access, and I recently read in a garden magazine that holes in trees could be filled with the foam sealant used for insulation in houses-it would expand/contract with tree growth. Is this true? Can I use it without fear of harm to the tree? I am also planning to cut off a large dead limb. Is there anything I need to be aware of- sealing the spot, how close to cut to the tree, etc?
Half-dead TreeMy maple tree is ten feet from the west side of our white garage, which is attached to a two story white home. Half of the tree has many dead branches, the other side is in full leaf. What causes this?
Dead tree? I planted two sugar maples last November. Each is about 7 feet tall. It has not grown any leaves this spring. How do I determine if they are dead? The nursery told us that these are hardy maples and rarely die.
Crimson KingWe have a crimson king maple that we planted 8 years ago and it has about half its leaves and some of the leaves have wilted. What happened?
Re-leafed Maple We have a red-leaved Maple and it budded out well this spring. However, after the last cold-snap, the upper branches failed to leaf out. Is it at all likely that the bare branches will come back next year?
Exposed Maple Roots We have a soft maple tree in our yard. Some of the large roots are exposed making it impossible to grow anything. We have a porch and deck about 5-6' away from the tree. The land slopes down from the porch and deck and we need to put something in to stop erosion from under the porch and deck. We have thought of putting in a timber planter digging down a bit. What impact would this have on the tree as we would have to cut into the root? Do you have any other suggestions?
Pointy Growths on Leaves> I have noticed multiple, small, vertical "spikes" on many of the leaves of my maple tree in my yard. What is this, and do I need to do anything?
Maple Bladder GallsWe have a couple of maple trees that are a couple of years old. They have got what look like red eggs on almost every leaf. We would like to find out what they are and what we can do for them.
Maple Losing BarkThere is a mature (sugar?) maple tree in my back yard whose bark is coming off in various sized sheets; from a few inches to a foot long. I have noticed powdery white spots on the tree that are most noticeable where the bark has come off. The spots range in size from pin-point to pin head. I don't know anything about maples but I have never seen a tree whose bark came off like this. The tree is quite large and I would REALLY hate to lose it!
Seedy MapleWe have a mature soft maple tree that is getting more and more seeds each year. Is there anything to do that would discourage all that seed growth--maybe spraying with something in the spring? The seeds are getting to be a MAJOR mess. The tree is about 28 years old--will this problem get worse and worse?
Trunk Rot We have a large silver maple tree (probably 50 - 60 feet tall) that lost a major branch many years ago. This branch was about 8-9 feet off the ground and over the years a hole has developed in the trunk as moisture has softened/rotted the wood. What can be done to fill this hole and thereby avoid further weakening the tree trunk?
Messy MulberryWe have a mulberry tree in our back yard that is very messy. The berries fall, creating a huge purple slick on our lawn not to mention the bird droppings and deer droppings left behind after they feed. Is there some way to stop this tree from producing fruit other than cutting it down?
Removing Stumps I just removed a conifer tree from my front yard. My intent is plant grass and a Japanese lilac in its place. Right now the root system is exposed and very noticeable. What is the best way to remove this root system and prepare the ground for the growth of grass?
Oozing SapMy tree trunk was oozing like a weepy sore does. I just looked at it again and now it isn't wet but the bark when I try to break a small piece or pull on it, sounds hollow and breaks easily. The tree is huge and the branches and leaves are in good condition being that they are green and growing.
Pruning TreesWhen is a good time to trim the branches off of trees?
Prune oaksWhat time of year that you should not trim a red oak tree.
Yellow Oak LeavesLast year I noticed that the leaves of my 4-5 yr. old pin oak were yellowish green. This year the leaves are quite yellow and many are undeveloped. Some of the small lower branches are dead. Scratching the bark shows green but not very much moisture. Is there a treatment available to correct this problem?
Pruning Shrubs I would like information on trimming old shrubs that have been let go too long. They are very overgrown and I'm not sure how to trim them. Also I am wondering how to trim low branches on trees. Can I trim them anywhere so I don't lose all the low branches but can still mow under them or do I have to trim by the trunk of the tree and is there a certain time of the season best to trim?
