Pruning Trees |
Question:
When is a good time to trim the branches off of trees?
Minnesota Master Gardeners say:
Late winter, just before spring growth starts, is the ideal time to prune tree. Pruning at that time minimizes the pruning wounds' exposure to fungal spores and insects that transmit disease. (It is especially important to avoid pruning oak trees from April through October to avoid spreading oak wilt.) Also, it is easier to see which branches need to be removed and maintain symmetry of form when the branches are leafless. However, with the exception of oaks, it is OK to remove a branch or two or prune very lightly at any time.
Maples, walnuts and birch drip sap and even though it doesn't hurt the tree, it may cause concern, so prune those just after they have leafed out in late spring or early summer. When you're looking for someone to prune your large trees, forest resources specialists with the U of M Extension Service suggest requesting a Certified Arborist. You can find a listing of them, and more information on tree care, through the U of M Forest Resources Extension home page at http://www.cnr.umn.edu/FR/extension.
