Pruning Apple Trees


Question:

When is the best time to prune apple trees?

Minnesota Master Gardeners say:

Ideally, one should prune apple trees while they are dormant, in the late winter or early spring. (February until early April) The longer you wait, the greater chance you have of infections of any sort, particularly spreading the bacterial disease fireblight.

Sanitize your pruning tools between trees by soaking them with a 10 percent solution of chlorine bleach. Here's an Extension guide to pruning:
