Selling Yard Walnut Trees

Question:

We recently bought a home near Lake Phalen and are considering having a very large black walnut tree removed from our yard. I thinking that this beautiful tree must have a considerable value as lumber. Can you recommend any companies that would remove the tree for lumber. I have called several from the phone book and none of them deal with sawmills.

Minnesota Master Gardeners say:

I don't want you to get your hopes too high about the lumber value of your black walnut tree. It may not be profitable to harvest a single tree, and there may be problems with your tree that would make it useless for lumber. Please read the following: http://www.agcom.purdue.edu/AgCom/Pubs/FNR/FNR-93.html . According to U Forestry folk, black walnut has dropped to the 5th most valuable wood now. When prices were higher, there were a few loggers who would buy black walnut. They were fairly particular in their requirements and/or were out of the TC metro area.
