The Minnesota Crop Production Retailers Association and University of Minnesota Extension will host the 2012 CPM Shortcourse and MCPR Trade Show December 11 through 13, 2012, at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

The 3-day program starts Tuesday, December 11 with the Technical Service Provider Training recertification program: "Conservation Activity Plans: An Update for Technical Service Providers" from 10 AM to 1 PM, Seed treatment-Category H recertification from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM and the Minnesota Crop Production Retailer's plenary session and annual meeting from 1:00 to 3:30. The plenary session will include the following topics: "The Proposed Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certification – What Should We Expect? How Should Ag dealers and Crop Advisors/Consultants respond? What will producers do?", "Are nutrients being mined from Minnesota Agricultural land?" and "Enhance environmental protection, increase production efficiency, increase farm profitability and improve sustainability at the field level-4R stewardship". Please refer to the MCPR website for more information about the Tuesday afternoon plenary session.

On Wednesday, December 12, the program will continue with pesticide applicator recertification for categories A (Core) and C (Field Crop Pest Management) and the Crop Pest Management Short Course.

The CPM Shortcourse's General Session will start with the theme "Taking the Long View". Drs. Frank Coale and Ed Bynum and Mr. Russ Stocker will present and discuss how in other parts of the country, regulatory intervention has changed how agri-business can operate. These three speakers will address the role and responsibilities of agribusiness to avoid regulatory intervention while making long term gains in the industry. Discussions will include the how nutrient mgt regulations have changed farming in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, how overuse of insecticides has created control problems of spider mites in dry land corn and the regulatory complexity in California where "pesticide application by prescription only" is now common.

The concurrent sessions on Wednesday afternoon will focus on emerging corn and soybean insect and disease issues, strategies for increasing soybean yield, insect resistance, potassium management in corn-soybean rotations, strategies for reducing drift of new and current crop protection products and management options for the increased number of soybean phytopthora root and stem rot races now being detected in Minnesota.

The concurrent sessions at the CPM short course on Thursday, December 13th starting at 8:00 AM begin with a wealth of pest, crop and fertilizer management topics including: using precision ag technologies for on the farm research, optimizing corn populations, the economics of proactive versus reactive herbicide resistance management strategies, corn nitrogen guideline updates and the drought and climate outlook for 2013 Minnesota field crops. Also included are results of Minnesota high corn population research results and recommendations for the use of nitrogen extender products. Three of the sessions will be dedicated to Soil and Water topics which will include: a new watershed nitrogen reduction planning tool, tillage/residue strategies for corn and soybeans and successful strategies to reduce nutrient watershed concentrations in the Mississippi watershed districts in Illinois.

 Who Should Attend?

Agronomists, sales people (seeds, chemicals, fertilizers), crop consultants, crop production specialists, regional and local extension educators, government agency personnel, farm managers, and anyone else who appreciates high quality research-based professional training.

 Continuing Education Credits

Certified crop advisors will be able to collect a total of 15 CCA continuing education credits over the course of the 3-day program.
