Choosing and Internet Provider - Questions To Ask
- Is it a local phone call?
- What type of connection do I get? (SLIP/PPP is preferred for Internet access)
- What services do I get? (e.g. full Internet access [email, Web, FTP] or email only, specialized content, etc.)
- What are the costs? (e.g. flat rate for unlimited use, hourly charges, or a combination of both?)
- Are there any hidden charges? (e.g. setup fees, software costs, etc.)
- What is the size of the provider's modem pool? (represents the number of people who can be using the service at the same time)
- What modem speeds are supported? For the most efficient connection, the provider should support modem speeds at least as fast as your own.
- What software setup support is provided? Do they provide an installation kit and instructions for configuring your computer to connect to the Internet?
- What (if any) Internet software is provided?
- What technical support is provided? Is phone assistance available? During what hours? What is the response time?
- For commercial providers: Is the content something I'm interested in? Can I find similar resources of the Internet?
