Un termómetro de mercurio roto es una amenaza seria para la salud de los niños. Si a usted se le rompe un termómetro de mercurio, no use una aspiradora o una escoba para limpiar; el mercurio los contaminará y luego distribuirá el mercurio por toda la casa.

PARA LIMPIAR:

• Organice los materiales necesarios para limpiar.
• Quítese el reloj y toda prenda de las manos ya que el mercurio se pegará al metal. Póngase guantes de goma.
• Use un foco o luz de pila (baterías) para localizar el mercurio.
• No toque el mercurio.

Distintas superficies necesitan diferentes métodos de limpieza:

• En superficies duras o de telas gruesas, use un papel grueso para juntar las gotas de mercurio. Use un gotero para recogerlas, y una bandeja para evitar que se le derramen. Levante las gotas con un cartón grueso. Con cuidado, colóquelas en un recipiente de boca ancha. Recoja lo que queda con un pedazo de papel engomado. Ponga el papel engomado, el gotero, el papel grueso, el cartón y los guantes en una bolsa de plástico. Luego ponga la bolsa y el recipiente de boca ancha dentro de otra bolsa de plástico.
• En alfombras, el lugar donde cayó el mercurio debe ser cortado y colocado dentro de una bolsa de plástico junto con todos los artículos que usó para limpiar.
• Si se le rompe dentro de un recipiente lleno de agua, recoja toda el agua posible sin mover el mercurio y luego recójalo con un gotero. Eche el mercurio recogido dentro de un recipiente de boca ancha y séllelo con papel engomado.
• Si se le escapa el mercurio por el tubo de desague del fregadero, se pegará a la trampa. Quite la trampa del desague y recójalo en un recipiente de boca ancha.

Luego de limpiar, marque las bolsas y los recipientes, sellados, como "desperdicio de mercurio" y llame a la Agencia Estatal para Control de Contaminación Ambiental, "Pollution Control Agency," para que le digan qué hacer con éstos desperdicios en forma adecuada.

A broken mercury thermometer is a serious health threat to children. If you break your mercury thermometer, DO NOT use a vacuum or a broom to clean up; the mercury will contaminate them and further distribute mercury throughout the house.

CLEANUP

• Assemble the necessary cleanup supplies.
• Remove jewelry and watches from your hands, as mercury will bond with the metal. Put on rubber gloves.
• Use a flashlight to locate the mercury.
• Do not touch the mercury.
• Different surfaces require different clean up procedures:

- On a hard surface or tightly woven fabric, use stiff paper to push mercury beads together. Use eyedropper to suction mercury beads, or working over a tray to catch any spill, lift the beads of mercury with the stiff cardboard paper. Carefully place the mercury in a wide mouth container. Pick up any remaining beads of mercury with sticky tape. Place contaminated tape in a plastic bag along with the eyedropper, stiff paper and gloves. Place this bag and sealed container in the second bag.
- On a carpet or a rug, the mercury-contaminated section should be cut out and placed in a plastic bag with all the cleanup items.
- In a sink of water, remove as much water without disturbing the mercury and recover the mercury with an eyedropper. Place in a wide container and seal with tape.
- In a drain, mercury will get caught in the sink trap. Working over a tray, remove the trap and pour the contents into large mouth container.

After any clean up procedure, always label bags or sealed-containers as mercury waste and call your state Pollution Control Agency for appropriate disposal.
