When you do your taxes, don't forget to see if you're eligible for the Federal Earned Income Credit and the Minnesota Working Family Credit. These tax credits are for working people who have low to moderate incomes. Remember, getting refunds through the Earned Income and Working Family Credits normally has no effect on a person' or family's ability to get money from AFDC, food stamps, Social Security, Medical Assistance or subsidized housing programs. These tax credits are available to eligible workers even if they didn't have enough job income to be required to file tax forms. In other words, if you're eligible and don't owe any income tax, you may still get money back -- BUT you must file both state and federal tax forms to get the money. What tax forms do you have to file? You need a federal tax form, federal schedule EIC form and a Minnesota long or short tax form. Most libraries and post offices have these forms with instructions available free. If you need help with the paperwork, contact VITA -- which stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. This tax help is free at sites all over Minnesota. To find out more about how to get FREE tax help, listen to INFO-U message 858. For more information about Earned Income and Working Family tax credits, call one of the following numbers:
In addition to the above credits, Federal Tax Credits are available for families with children and for education. For more information on these credits call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. |
