Many people want to know the best time to uncover their roses in the spring. Well, of course this depends a great deal on the weather - what sort of spring we're having...
Don't be in too big a hurry to remove the mulch or protective material from your roses. In general, you want to uncover your roses when the danger of hard frost is past. This is usually some time from mid-to late April.
We don't recommend using rose cones, but if you do, you should begin reomoving them on the very warm, sunny days earlier in the spring. This prevents damaging heat buildup inside the cone. Put the cones back on when days are not warm and sunny, or if the temperature is expected to drop into the teens at night.
Remove mulch in stages so if there is a late killing frost the base of the plant will still be protected.
If you use a double mulch of straw and soil, remove the straw in early April as it thaws, then gradually remove the soil in late April. This way, you can keep your roses well protected.
