Snow Loads on Roofs

Minnesota winters can create dilemmas for homeowners. During especially snowy years or after a very heavy snowfall homeowners worry about how much snow their roofs can support. Homeowners have a couple of options.

In Minnesota, plans showing design details to meet expected snow loads are usually required to receive a building permit. The plans for your home may be on file at your local building inspection office. To help you understand the plans, or if you can not find plans for your home, you may want to hire a licensed professional engineer. At a structural engineering or architectural firm you can find a professional to answer your questions about the strength of your roof.
