Where to Get Help With Your Taxes

Following are some phone numbers where you can get your tax questions answered or get help from someone to fill out the forms. Get a pencil and paper and jot down the following phone numbers and keep your pencil and paper handy when you call these numbers.

To find out if you qualify for the Earned Income and Working Family Tax Credits, call the 24-hour hotline at 651-296-3781. On weekdays and Saturdays, you have the option on the hotline to speak directly with a tax specialist about your questions. People who use a TDD can call 1-800-627-3529 for Minnesota Relay and ask for 651-296-3781.

Free tax help is available from trained volunteers at over 450 places across Minnesota. This tax help program is called VITA, which stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. To find a free VITA tax help location near you, call 651-296-3781.

The IRS will also figure your Earned Income Tax Credit for you. But you do need to give them some information on the tax form. Tax forms and instruction booklets are available at most banks, libraries, and post offices. You can also request forms by phone. The IRS information number in Minnesota is 1-800-829-1040.

During the tax season many people find that they need Social Security numbers for their children in order to file their tax forms. To get a Social Security number for a child, you must fill out an application form and provide documents that show your child's age, citizenship, and who you are. To get an application form or to verify a Social Security number, call 1-800-772-1213 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The quickest way to get a Social Security number for a child is to visit the nearest Social Security office and bring the necessary documents with you.

These include the child's birth certificate or baptismal record AND some form of identity, such as a driver's license, school record, or medical record if the child is over 6 years in age or, if the child is under age 6, proof of the identity of the person who is applying on the behalf of the child. You must provide original documents, or certified copies.
