What Is Home Insect Control (HIC)?

Home Insect Control is a Master Gardener program in Minnesota that takes an in depth look at insects found in and around homes and other buildings and how to manage them. While Master Gardeners receive about 45 minutes on household insects during core course, they participate in 12 - 15 hours of instruction during the Home Insect Control class.

The subjects covered include ants, wasps, cockroaches, flies, stored product insects, spiders, bed bugs, wood-infesting insects, and nuisance invaders, such as lady beetles, boxelder bugs. This class combines lecture with labs. Dissecting microscopes are available to take a close look at all of the insects that are discussed.

The goal of this program is to establish a group of master gardeners that have specialized training in household insects and their control. Home Insect Control is ongoing educational opportunity with update classes given on a regular basis. Master gardeners that take this class are asked to volunteer some of their time specifically on household insect issues.

This course is taught in St. Paul over the course of five evenings. This program is also occasionally taught outside of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area typically as an all day Friday and Saturday program. In addition to master gardeners, all extension staff are also welcome to take this class.
