- Perennial yellowish-green grass-like plant is common in moist areas but is occasionally found in drier conditions
- Long, narrow, waxy appearing triangular shaped stems
- Flowers are yellowish or brownish spikelets similar to those of grasses
- Root system is fibrous
- Underground stems known as rhizomes form off-white, marble sized tubers (nutlets) from which new plants grow each spring
