Characteristics:

• Annual grass that grows best during warm weather (summer)
• Broad, flat growing habit when young; upright to 3’ when older
• Older leaves and sheaths turn dark red to maroon in color
• Leaf blade is flat with prominent midrib; hairy on both surfaces
• Flower head consists of 7-10 whorled finger-like spikelets
• Roots are fibrous; no underground stems (rhizomes) produced

Significance

• Maintain minimum 2 1/2 - 3” mowing height and good turfgrass density
• Common in areas next to curbs, driveways and sidewalks where other lawn grasses do poorly
