Characteristics:
- Annual grass that grows best during warm weather (summer)
- Broad, flat growing habit when young; upright to 3’ when older
- Older leaves and sheaths turn dark red to maroon in color
- Leaf blade is flat with prominent midrib; hairy on both surfaces
- Flower head consists of 7-10 whorled finger-like spikelets
- Roots are fibrous; no underground stems (rhizomes) produced
Significance
- Maintain minimum 2 1/2 - 3” mowing height and good turfgrass density
- Common in areas next to curbs, driveways and sidewalks where other lawn grasses do poorly
