Is this plant a weed?

Common Mallow, Malva neglecta Wallr.

Found in:

  • Lawns and landscape beds
  • Common in low maintenance areas

Characteristics:

  • Annual or biennial growing 4-12” tall
  • Short hairs are present on stems and upper and lower leaf surfaces
  • Leaves are crinkly, round to kidney shaped with finely toothed edges (margins), arise alternately along stem
  • Flowers are white with purple tinge, 5-petaled, occur May to Oct.
  • Taprooted along with coarsely branched shallower root system

Significance:

  • Roots can form from fragmented stem pieces left in the soil
