Is this plant a weed?

Common Blue Violet Syn. Wild Violet, Viola papilionacea Pursh, Syn. V. sororia

Found in:

  • Lawns and landscape beds
  • Grows in shady, moist areas (drought tolerant when mature)

Characteristics:

  • Low growing perennial that often grows in patches
  • Grows best during cool temperatures (spring, fall)
  • Heart-shaped leaves with rounded teeth on leaf margin (leaf edge)
  • Dark violet, violet, blue or nearly white flowers bloom May through June
  • Root system is fibrous along with short, thick, branching rhizomes (underground stems)

Significance:

  • Will adapt to lower mowing heights by growing smaller leaves with shorter stems
