Size: Up to 1 inch long

Where/When: Typically found in the soil under leaves, manure, and other areas of high organic matter. May be found in gardens under compost piles; grassy pastures and meadows; and on forest floors. Records of march fly larvae feeding on the roots of grass do not apply in Minnesota. Generally active in spring.

Significance: Larva feeds on decaying organic debris. Does not harm garden plants.
