Cercospora beticola

  • Leaves develop circular (1/8 – 3/16 inch) brown to gray spots with distinct reddish-purple
  • Lower leaves are infected first and often most severely affected
  • In humid weather, produce silver or steel-gray spores which gives the leaf spot a fuzzy appearance
  • Centers of spots may have black dots
  • Plants may be stunted

  • Small white larva feed between leaf surfaces, creating winding "mines"
  • These "mines" eventually expand into irregular blotches
  • Mines are opaque at first and then turn brown
  • Adult flies are gray-brown, small (1/3"), and present May to June
