Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota
Size: 3/4 - 1 1/2 inch long
Where/When: Most garden plants can be chewed upon, but more commonly bean, leafy vegetables, iris, and corn. Nymphs are active from May to September and adults are active from July to September.
Significance: Generally not a problem in most years. Chews leaves, pods, and other plant parts. Potential to defoliate plants when populations are high. Most likely a problem in late summer when other food sources are scarce. Prolonged dry springs over several years can significantly increase grasshopper numbers.
