Serve It Up Safely™ Online Courses

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much do the courses cost?

The full course is $75 and individual course modules may be purchased at $25 each.

Q: How do I register for the course?

Registration is easy! See step-by-step instructions here.

Q: How long will I have access to the course?

Once you register, you will have access to the course for 90 days. You should receive a reminder a couple of weeks before your access is set to expire.

Q: Do I need to complete the course all at once?

You can go in and out of the course as often as you like. Since this is an online course, it can be completed at your own pace. Be sure to keep record of the Internet ID and password you set when you register. Also, it may be helpful to save the course link in your internet favorites so you can easily access it again in the future.

Q: How much time can I expect to spend on this course?

The time spent on the course will vary by individual. If you are renewing your food manager certification, you need four hours. That means you would complete four of the modules; each module takes about an hour to complete. The exact time needed to complete the course will vary depending on your current knowledge and the amount of time spent doing additional readings and activities. Also, you may choose to take more than four modules for your own learning, in which case you would need more time to complete the course. If you need fewer hours because you have already received some qualifying renewal hours elsewhere, just select the individual course modules you need to meet your remaining requirements.

Q: Can I receive documentation for the time spent in the course?

Yes! After completing each module, you will be asked to complete a quiz. After successfully completing a quiz, you will be directed to a web page to print off your certificate of participation. You will need to do this for each module you complete. If you are renewing your food manager certification, you need to complete four modules and print off four different certificates of participation.

Q: How do I print a certificate of completion for the modules that I completed?

Be sure to begin each lesson by clicking on it from this main course page. After you complete a lesson or a required task, a check mark appears on this main course page indicating completion. Once you have completed a lesson, you will be able to access that lesson's certification quiz. (If you finished the lesson and do not see the check mark indicating completion, refresh the page.) After passing the lesson's certification quiz, you can access and print your certificate from this main course page. If your certificate shows a guest i.d., go to the profile settings on the left navigation to add your name and then reprint your certificate. Watch this video to see the steps.

Q: Help! I’ve never participated in an online course before.

Moodle, the courseware used for this course, is easy to use. Once you get into the course, everything should be self explanatory. If you want more information on Moodle, watch an online orientation.

That being said, it should be noted that online courses are not for everyone. You need a reliable computer, specific software, and internet access. It also helps if you are generally comfortable with computers and being online.

Also, be assured that help will always be available once you register for the course. If you are having Moodle issues, you can send an email to moodle@umn.edu.

Q: Help! I’m having problems registering for the course.

Visit the Registration and Access page for instructions. If you are having difficulty registering for the course, first double check that you are using Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer web browsers to register. (People commonly experience “stuck” screens when they use other web browsers, like Google Chrome.)

If you are having difficulties with a specific screen, make sure that you are answering all “required” questions.

If you are not sure what to answer for specific questions, the screen captures (627 K PDF) may help you.

If none of the above steps help you, contact Technology Help Staff at 612-301-4357. Tell them which Serve It Up Safely™ Online Course you are trying to access and give them the details about the problem(s) you are experiencing.

If you’ve tried all the above steps and are not getting anywhere with the College of Continuing Education IT, contact us and we will try to assist you.

Q: Help! I’ve registered for the course but I can’t remember how to get into (or back into) the course.

Click on the direct course link to access the course. We recommend you save it in your internet browser favorites. Alternatively, you can always go to your MyU page, log in with your Internet ID/password, and click on your “Key Links” tab and then on "Moodle Home". This course, in addition to any other UMN online course you have signed up for, will be listed on this web page. (Please note, there may be up to a 12 hour delay from when you register and when the course appears on your MyU course page. You should be able to access the online course immediately however by clicking the direct course link.)

Q: Help! I’ve registered for the course but when I try to log in I keep getting an error message about my Internet ID and/or password or it asks for a self-enrollment key.

Double check that you are using the right Internet ID and/or password. See the next question if you can’t remember your Internet ID and/or password.

If you are confident that it is correct and your error message talks about your password “not being strong enough” proceed with trying to enter it anyway. If you’ve entered it and it seems to stop you from proceeding, call UMN Technology Help Services at 612-301-4357.

If you’ve tried the above step and are not getting anywhere, contact us and we will try to assist you.

Q: Help! I’ve registered for the course but I can’t remember my Internet ID and/or password.

If you have an x500 Internet ID, given to University staff and students, you would have used this Internet ID for your course. If you do have an x500 Internet ID, you would have used your complete email address (including the @XXX) as your Internet ID.

To retrieve your password, call UMN Technology Help Services at 612-301-4357.

If you’ve tried the above step and are not getting anywhere, contact us and we will try to assist you.

Q: Help! I’ve registered for the course but it’s not showing up on my MyU courses page.

Once you register, the course should appear on your my courses page within 12 hours. Go to your MyU page, log in with your Internet ID/password, and click on your “my COURSES” tab. This course, in addition to any other UMN online course you have signed up for, will be listed on this web page.

If it is not showing up after 12 hours, this most likely means that when you registered you set up a “sponsored guest account” vs. a regular guest account. You should still be able to access the course by going to the direct course link. Save it to your internet favorites so you can find it easily.

You can also try contacting College of Continuing Education IT at cceinfo@umn.edu or 612-624-4000 and tell them that you suspect you have signed up for a sponsored guest account vs. a regular guest account. Tell them you are trying to get into EXT 0041 sec: 001 – Serve It Up Safely™ Online Course from your MyU courses tab and tell them the problem you are experiencing.

If you’ve tried the above step and are not getting anywhere, contact us and we will try to assist you.

Q: Help! I’m having problems within the course itself.

If you are having problems with the general course platform, Moodle, watch an online orientation.

If you are having problems, getting a specific element of the course (activity, link, quiz, etc.) to work, double check that you are using Mozilla Firefox to enter and view the course. If you are not, this is the problem! Download the web browser and use it EVERY TIME you enter, for best usability.

If you are having problems and/or questions with specific content contained in the course, contact us.

If you’ve tried the above steps and you still have problems, please let us know and we will try to assist you.

Contact us for additional assistance as needed.
