Potatoes

Potatoes are valued throughout the world.

  • There are more than 5,000 varieties of potatoes in the world. Potatoes originated in the Andes Mountains of South America and in the southern highlands of Mexico, and have been cultivated by humans for at least 7000 years.
  • The average person in the United States eats 140 pounds of potatoes every year.
  • The potato was the first vegetable to be grown in space!
